The ear is an important factor in determining the hair style of the person. All kinds of defects in the shape of the ear affect the person’s external appearance, thus his self-confidence.
Prominent ear aesthetics is a surgical aesthetic operation performed when the angle between the ear and head is wide enough to damage the self-confidence of the person as a result of congenital or traumatic bending. With this operation, the ear is brought closer to the head area and the appearance of the ear that dominates the face is reduced. The aim is to make changes in the ear that people feel good about in terms of shape and size.
Who Can Apply Prominent Ear Aesthetics?
Prominent ear aesthetics, also known as otoplasty or pinnapilastia, is applied when the angle of the ear with the head is more than it should be. So much so that the ear with a wide angle may appear larger than it is. However, the ideal angle between ear and head can be defined as an average of 30 degrees. In the case of prominent ears, this angle can be up to 40 degrees.
Since the prominent ear has a great effect on the appearance, it directly affects the mental state of many people, especially children. For this reason, prominent ear aesthetics is an operation that is frequently applied in childhood. Especially the ear structure sitting up to the age of 7 is effective in this case. However, the fact that physical characteristics are frequently mentioned by peers in childhood is another reason for performing this operation. The physician’s opinion on the applicability of the operation to children is also important.
Apart from children, adults can also have prominent ear aesthetics for cosmetic reasons.
Suitable candidates for prominent ear aesthetics can be summarized as follows:
- People whose ear size does not match head size,
- People with asymmetrical ears,
- Those who have ears protruding outward,
- Those who could not get the desired result from previous ear surgery,
- Persons older than 5 years of age with one or more of these characteristics.
It is a prerequisite that these people’s general health conditions, including their psychological conditions, are suitable for a surgical operation.
Prominent Ear Aesthetics Techniques
There are two different types of prominent ear aesthetics, the classical method and the scarless method.
1 – Classical method: The ear cartilage is reached through the small incision opened behind the auricle and the excesses at this point can be filed, removed or curled inward as planned before the operation. At the end of this process, permanent stitches are made. After the operation, only small incision marks remain behind the ear.
2 – Scarless method: In this method, the anterior ear is entered through the fold and the auricle is shaped. While doing this, the incision and stitches are hidden in the ear fold. For this reason, there is no visible scar after the operation.
In addition to these methods, prominent ear aesthetics with rope can also be performed without surgery. With this method, the ear can be brought to the desired position with threads passed through the ear cartilage.
