Problems can arise in teeth for various dental reasons and these problems can cause tooth loss. Apart from chewing and appearance problems, tooth loss also causes serious discomfort in the jawbone and negatively affects the quality of life of people.
Dental implants are structures designed in screw and root form and used in the treatment of tooth loss. These structures resemble the shape of natural tooth roots and have a function like natural roots. Contrary to what is known by many, not the whole tooth, but the part that is placed in the bone is called a dental implant. Dental implants are placed in the jawbone with a surgical procedure and fill the gap created by tooth loss. However, dental implants can be applied after tooth extraction.
Types of Dental Implants
There are two main types of dental implants according to the place in the mouth:
Endosteal Implant: These types of implants are placed directly in the jawbone and hold one or more artificial teeth in place. Intraosseous implants look like small conical or cylindrical screws.
Subperiosteal Implant: This type of implant has a metal base that is attached to the jawbone or under the gum tissue. Artificial roots are attached to support the protrusions on the gums, imitating real tooth roots. Sub-bone implants are used less than intraosseous implants. However, these types of implants are ideal for patients whose bone tissue will not support the osseous implant.
Which type of dental implant is suitable for the patient depends on the need and the decision of the physician. In addition, the dental implant can be applied to a single tooth or to the entire mouth. When done for the whole mouth, the process can be completed in a single day; implants have permanent features and are not inserted and removed like traditional dentures.
The Used Materials in Dental Implants
Titanium: The most used and compatible material with tissues. Titanium is the first choice for doctors, it is safe, strong, and its results are effective and last for a long time.
Porcelain and Polymer: It is possible to use these materials for patients who does not want a metal material in their mouth. However, the implants made of porcelain and polymer are not preferred.
Zirconium: This material is used instead of titanium, since it contains metal and it is a strong material, but it is under the ceramic category.
During the examination, your doctor will determine which material is better for your condition.
