Endodontics is a branch of science that deals with dental problems occurring in the periapical (around the root tip) tissue with the nerve, blood vessel and connective tissue located in the inner part of the tooth (root) and called pulp tissue. These procedures, which are performed within the scope of this discipline and have a wide range, are known as endodontic procedures.
Pulp tissue can be damaged and inflamed due to untreated deep caries, recurrent dental problems and severe impacts, and this tissue may lose its vitality if left untreated. While the pulp that has lost its vitality causes swelling by affecting the gum, it can leave people alone with very severe pain. Likewise, this pain can spread to the face, neck or head. Bone loss may occur in the area where the root of the tooth is located. One of the endodontics procedures is preferred to prevent such situations, to eliminate deformations and damages in the teeth, especially due to bacterial causes, and to bring functionality to the tooth.
Applications Covered by Endodontics
Endodontics includes the following applications:
- Canal treatment,
- Prevention and treatment of diseases occurring in the pulp,
- Endodontics re-treatment,
- Endodontic surgery applications,
- Teeth whitening after endodontic treatment,
- Treatment of dental damage due to trauma,
- Dental implants,
- Implant supported chin-face prosthesis,
- Diagnosis and treatment of jawbone pathology,
- Embedded tooth extraction,
- Fixed wire therapy,
In addition to these applications, endodontics is generally used as another name for root canal treatment. Root canal treatment, which has a success rate of 90%, involves cleansing and restructuring the root canals in the tooth with the help of an antiseptic substance.
Who can have Endodontics Procedures done?
There is no specific age for which endodontics is recommended. As it can be used in the treatment of cleft palate in newborn, endodontics can be used for deformations in teeth due to aging. This treatment can be applied at any age, but the type of treatment varies according to age.
Generally, people who experience the following conditions need endodontics treatment and endodontic treatment is applied as a result of the examinations:
- Long-term sensitivity to hot and cold,
- The tooth turns a different color than the first color,
- Pain during chewing or inability to perform the chewing activity completely,
- Sudden toothache, especially at night.
Apart from all these, the general health condition of the patient must be suitable for the endodontics procedure. This is decided by various health tests conducted under the leadership of the physician before the procedure.
