What is Acupuncture Treatment?

In fact, the use of acupuncture instead of anesthesia during some surgeries in China reveals the power of this technique. Although operating a patient using acupuncture needles seems like an extreme approach, millions of people around the world resort to acupuncture for many health problems, such as chronic pain, high blood pressure, nausea, and obesity.

It is not a coincidence that this technique, which has been used for thousands of years in many Far Eastern countries such as China, Japan and Korea, has survived to the present day. Acupuncture still exists because it works! Some hospitals in China take an approach that I think should be an example to the whole world. The patient is offered both chemical and traditional medicine alternatives, and the choice is left to the patient. In some cases, when the patient is exposed to the negative side effects of the medication, the dose is reduced and the treatment is supported with acupuncture.

The Philosophy Behind

One of the biggest mistakes that chemical medicine falls is that it deals with the body partly, not as a whole. Consider depression; you try to correct brain chemistry, but in fact, the problem is an imbalance in the intestinal flora. Unfortunately, it is neglected that the system consists of many intertwined mechanisms, and any failure in any of these mechanisms will affect the whole.
Contrary to chemical medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine sees the body as a complex system in which everything interacts with each other. The basis of the teaching lies the understanding that any imbalance in this biological system causes diseases. If the body’s impaired balance is not recreated, the journey towards chronic diseases is inevitable. According to the acupuncture teaching, there are 14 main energy points called meridians in the body, and an energy called Chi circulates in all internal organs and in every cell, and therefore between the body and meridians. Chi is the energy of life, the power that keeps us alive. The basic condition of a healthy life is possible with this energy flowing throughout the body in a balanced way without any interruption.
We have documents indicating that acupuncture dates back 2500 years in Traditional Chinese Medicine. However, it is interesting that there are archaeological findings that show that this ancient treatment is not only limited to the Far East, it is also a process applied in civilizations in Ancient Egyptians, Persians and some parts of Europe.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Though there was thousands of years of history and all the evidence behind how it worked, it was not known exactly how the treatment in question worked until medicine arrived where it is today. Today, there are now many studies showing that acupuncture stimulates the central nervous system, releasing natural chemicals that affect the body’s biological processes. In 2003, the World Health Organization / WHO signed a comprehensive study on acupuncture. The results obtained by examining the previous clinical studies on acupuncture allow us to better understand the acupuncture’s mechanism of action.

• Acupuncture increases the release of immune system cells and pain relieving chemicals by stimulating electromagnetic signals.
• It provides pain and pain control by decreasing the activity in the part of the brain associated with pain, that is, in the limbic system.
• It acts by stimulating the pituitary gland with the hypothalamus, which controls many mechanisms in the body.
• It affects the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones, causing positive changes in brain chemistry.

Acupuncture and Limbic System

Today, all we know about the limbic system reveals the importance of acupuncture. Emotions, learning, memory are all controlled by this system in the brain. This is the source of emotional responses such as happiness, joy, restlessness, anxiety, sadness, anxiety, or aggression to your incoming warnings. Eating and drinking will also be controlled by the limbic system. This is why acupuncture is so effective in slimming treatments. The reason behind the effective use of acupuncture in problems such as smoking cessation and alcohol dependence is that addictions are closely related to this part of the brain, namely the limbic system.

As can be seen, there is a very scientific fact behind this treatment, which has a history of thousands of years, to date. Of course, the existence of such a center in the brain was unknown 2000 years ago, but it was obvious that acupuncture therapy worked. Phytotherapy science also investigates what active substances are in the plants that chemical medicine has labeled as ‘folk medicine’, how they affect the treatment of the disease and makes a scientific explanation of the information passed down from generation to generation. Healing teachings, such as acupuncture and phytotherapy, that have a human history behind them, are extremely valuable tools to protect our health.
